APRIL 30 - Whimbrels at 9pm in the evening gloom, having just arrived to roost at Brockholes, Preston. Numbers reached a maximum of 130 this year, much lower than normal, probably because of the high water levels which covered the shallows and areas of low flat mud which they favour. In previous years up to 500 have been counted at peak times. Interestingly they favour this west coast route of Britain when heading north in the Spring to their breeding grounds but in the autumn when heading south, they pass through Yorkshire, with only the occasional straggler seen here (April 30, 2016)
